New property and summer update

Please read all of this if you can, we will also be adding it to our website with more updates to come next week announcing our freshly purchased NEW PROPERTY!!!! (That still needs a lot of work😥)

JUNE: We’re open our normal hours for the rest of June, and a couple more right before the 4th of July.
Saturday, June 20th 9-5
Tuesday, June 23rd 9-3
Thursday, June 25th 9-3
Tuesday, June 30th 9-3
Thursday, July 2nd 9-3

JULY: We have a bunch of work and cleanup to do at our new location before contractors can come in. We’ll use the first two weeks of July to do that, but we are adding some dates in the second half. We will close at 1pm on all of these dates due to the heat.

AUGUST: We will be closed all of August due to the heat and lack of air-conditioning in our space. We know!! That sucks! But we are hoping it is the last year we ever have to do this, as one thing we are super excited to put into our new space is AIR CONDITIONING!!!!

We know a lot of change can be very frustrating, but we are committed to all of the work that’s coming. That way we can provide an incredible new location that expands on everything we’ve ever been trying to do, and definitely makes it more comfortable for you to visit.

If you want to help us do all of the work we need, please visit our how to donate page and donate financially if you’re able. We’ll name the AC system after you if you give enough (you’ll be a hero)!!

Thanks to all of our supporters, new followers, and longtime friends for your patience and encouragement through this entire process. We know we’re just at the beginning, but we can’t wait to see where we end up. We’re taking you all with us!! 📚❤️

We are a 501(c)(3) certified, non-profit corporation in Houston, Texas. We love books and we want to create a community that shares their love of reading for free.

All of our inventory is donated and our events are sponsored entirely by the community and by donations. All donations are tax-deductible.

We opened our location where people can:

1. Donate books they no longer want
2. Take home books they find in our collection
3. Chat with fellow book lovers
4. And support our mission through volunteering or donation

Every Tuesday and Thursday, 9am-3pm
1st & 3rd Saturday of the month, 9am-5pm

Our address is 405 Velasco Street, Houston, TX 77003.

The space is just south east of downtown, located near Navigation Boulevard’s shopping district, and is within walking distance of the Coffee Plant/Second Ward Green Line MetroRail station.

About

The Book Cycle extends the life cycle of books by keeping them in circulation for free. We accept donations of any unwanted books and hold open hours, making them available to anyone who will appreciate them.

Our organization was founded in 2012. While we have been through several iterations, our goal has always been a location where people can gather to search for books, take books home, or donate unwanted books. We’ve realized over time how important our space as a true third space is. As safe, cost-free spaces disappear, we know that in addition to a huge free resource of books, what we can provide for people is a community location filled with reading, neighbors, and people who appreciate just being.

We know how important reading, education, and especially access are in our society. So we will work to always keep our resource free and no-stings-attached. We have been so grateful for our supporters and patrons who donate unwanted books, and we do everything we can to get each book we receive out on a shelf. We have always wanted to ensure that every book we could would find a new home, and bring a new person excitement and joy at its discovery.

Our regular open hours allow people to drop off donations, peruse the collections, or walk away with any books in which they are interested, all for free. We house a large collection and giant variety of books in an ever-changing stock. We accept books of any age or genre, and have a large collection of children’s and young adult books. Books can be donated during any of our open hours, or dropped off during any volunteer hours.
